Book containing general standing instructions addressed from the King to "Our right trusty and welbeloved councellor George Lord Dartmouth Master Generall of our Ordnance, and to the Master or Masters Generall of the Ordnance for the time being." The duties of all the officers and staff of the office are set out, with a table of their pay on the quarter books. Some later additions and alterations to the instructions are made by James II in 1686, including the recovery of papers belonging to the Office from the executors of former officers of whom Col. William Legge is one.
Small folio 12¾" × 8", marbled boards, ff.1-63, of which 1-3, 60-63 blank, 4-55 paginated 1-104.
MS on spine: "Instructions for the Office of Ordnance."
Inclosed loose at front of book a ticket with: "Evans Pall Mall. July 1838. Lot 1085 - Ordnance Office Instructions for the Govt. of the Ordnance drawn up in 1683, when the first Lord Dartmouth was Master General. folio -" In pencil inside front board: "Ordnance 1683.", probably same hand as on cover of Salt Manuscript 261.
