TitleJonathan Trumbull to Lord Dartmouth
Date1 Oct 1783
DescriptionLebanon, refers to letters written by him, in his previous official capacity, to Dartmouth at the beginning of those troubles which brought on a war between Great Britain and America, particularly mentions one of Mar 1775 and regrets that his suggestions were not followed, recommends Mr Temple, who is going to England, he and Dr Franklin were the only Crown officers of rank who were dismissed from very lucrative and honouable employments for their attachment to America, or rather for not falling in with the other Crown officers in the misrepresentations which so fatally deceived Great Britain, Dr Franklin has been employed and amply honoured and rewarded and would not accept, if offered, any reparation, Mr Temple is therefore singular in his sufferings, he had been Lieutenant-Governor of one province, had a seat at the council-board in five others, was surveyor-general of the royal revenue in America, and Surveyor General of Customs, writes this not only for Temple's sake but to show that he also wishes oblivion to past injuries and a lasting return of friendship and commerce between the two nations, sends this by his son who returns to England to improve his natural turn to the pencil, which his countryman the celebrated Mr West considers worthy of cultivation
